As a kid growing up in a single family home my mother always thought me how to provide for myself, and thought me many ways of how I would need to do so. One of the most important skills that she pushed was the ability to cook for myself. For me this came easy however, for my two older brothers, which was one task that they seem to of not wanted to pick up. They figured “Hey mom, I will get my good wife and she will cook for me”.

That is where they went wrong my mom said and she was happy that one of her sons’ took the passion of cooking and loved it. I also had an influence by my father, as well he is the one who thought me how to elevate my game of cooking and moved it to the grill. I actually prefer cooking on the grill is much more health than frying, baking, and many other ways of cooking.

As a kid being in the kitchen with my mom and helping her prepare all the meals was actually fun and exciting, for my mom it was very special for her as well because she knew that I was getting older by the second, and cooking is something that kept her baby close to her… Yes I’m the youngest son… the baby… yea yea yeah…. As I continue to get older so did my skills in the kitchen, I soon no longer needed mothers’ supervision and I was soon making meals for the house to give my mother a break. I actually enjoyed feeding the house and being able to take a load off my mom because I can see it in her face that it was not easy to do all that she does so well. I became great a cooking and I thought to myself “ I love cooking, I also love playing football, I got the best idea yet”. I made a plan. I’m going to make it to the NFL and then save enough money to make a restaurant, not just any restaurant, but a restaurant that someone is going to want to come again and again. I promise my Sauce that I learned to make will keep them coming back as well as the sauce “Swagger” as a person will keep them smiling and feel welcomed.

The store that I go which has been very great for me is Meijer’s. Normally in my mother’s home, she would go different places to go shop and I would go with her. However, I am on my own now and I have to look for great deals at different stores in Ann Arbor and it seem that Meijer’s is the best fit for me. The benefits that I get from going shopping at Meijer’s is that I get great deals on the different foods that I want to cook and also Meijer’s is down the street from me so this also gives the idea of convenience. This gives me the satisfaction of being able to buy all that I want also not spending as much money as you would at other stores (Babbins/Harris, 28)
Meijer’s brings utilitarian value for me because they solve the problem of high pricing, as well as having a wide variety of foods to pick from that is very healthy as fitting for me (Babbins/Harris, 29). Growing up my mom made sure that I ate my vegetables as well as the meats that she provided, and now that I am on my own she knows that I will be eating great as well as choosing the right foods to cook because of the experiences that she gave me.
Shopping at Meijer’s gives me the opportunity to get all the things that I want. Being a great cook is something I take very seriously and once I am done with what I made I feel happy about it. Knowing that people love your cooking is also a great feeling as well. Cooking brings me a hedonic value because this allows me to satisfied, as well as joyful that I have made something great to eat. (Babbins/Harris, 29)

If you’re into cooking or want to learn I can defiantly give you some pointers.

  1. Hi Royce, I love to cook too but I must say I don't have much grilling experience, I'll be looking forward to reading more of your posts to learn some pointers from an expert! Perhaps we should have a pre-class cookout one day, I don't think 8:30 is too early for some good BBQ, do you?

One of my favorite places to find value priced fruits and vegetables in Ann Arbor is the Kerrytown Farmers Market. The prices from vendor to vendor definitely vary, so the Info Search and Evaluation stages of your purchase process to find the best deals may take longer than they would at Meijer, I think the hedonic value of people watching, meeting the farmers who are supplying your food, and supporting the local community outweighs the extra few minutes it takes to pick out your produce (Babin/Harris 28 and Ch. 6). Before I go to the market, I like to check out their Facebook page to see what is in season (https://www.facebook.com/a2market). Buying the in season produce usually means that it's less expensive and really fresh. Since you're big on grilling, I'd recommend corn, peppers and, if you're feeling adventurous, peaches!

  2. Hi Royce, I enjoyed reading about your blog. I love to cook too and I like grilling a lot too. I think it brings out many different flavors in the food. I think one of the most unique things about your blog was the relationship you have with your mother and how you guys bonded over cooking. This was unique because like you said not many boys like to take the time to learn to cook.

Meijer is a great place to shop. I do all of my grocery shopping there. I don't know if you have heard of mPerks but they are a great way to save money at Meijer. You go online and look through the coupons they have for different food items and you clip them. It is quick and easy and also helps you plan out your grocery trip.

I look forward to what you will be writing about in your next blog post. A suggestion for your next post maybe to write about your some of your recipes, but be sure not to give away any secrets lol.

  3. Hey Royce, I really enjoyed reading your blog and grilling is my favorite form of cooking as well. Similar to you, my father taught me the way of the grill as well, and I agree it's not just a great skill to know in order to take good care of your body when you are living on your own, but also a fun skill to learn and build a close relationship with your family in the house. Since I was little, I'd always cook when I was with my mom and grill when I was with my dad.

When I'm at school, I do almost all of my shopping at Meijer also because it's very convenient and they have a broad selection, which brings utilitarian value to the table as you mentioned. Have you ever heard of Lucky's Market down by Benny's where the old Kroger used to be on Industrial? They have a great butcher's section with an awesome selection of fresh meats, including steaks, different varieties of burgers, and pretty much anything we'd love to throw on the grill. Although it is a little more expensive than Meijer, it adds a hedonic value for me because it gives me the immediate gratification of changing up my routine when I desire a change from my usual selections and seasonings (Babin/Harris 29). When I’m making these decisions, it falls into my consumption process, namely the costs and benefits (Angell Lecture 9/14). Like I said, it is a little more expensive than Meijer, which takes cost into consideration, but it allows me to change up my routine for special occasions or when I am craving something specific, which applies to the benefits it provides me.

If you have some spare time and want to try something new, I recommend checking out Lucky's! (http://www.luckysmarket.com). I can’t wait to read your future blogs and learn more about what you personally like to do to change up your grill game, and you can expect to see me at that restaurant of yours in a few years!
